Week 5 Digital Photography

I looked in the thesaurus for composition and aesthetics and this is what I found.

composition (n)

Synonyms: constitution, makeup, structure, components, constituents, parts
Synonyms: work of art, creation, work, opus, masterpiece, piece
Synonyms: arrangement, configuration, conformation, structure, alignment

aesthetic (adj)

Synonyms: artistic, visual, appealing, beautiful

As I looked through my pictures and many other pictures on the internet it was obvious that the difference between a picture and a piece of art was the composition or the aesthetic appeal. When I began taking the photos or my assignments this week I paid more attention to what pleased my eye than I did to the actual subject.

  1. This is the key! Paying more attention to what pleases the eye rather than the subject. Great point.

Yes, the subject matters, to tell the story you want to tell, but the way you present it matters more than just showing the subject straight on. Your work above is a perfect example of this. Same subject, different angles, a whole lot more story in the second one.

  2. You said "I paid more attention to what pleased my eye than I did to the actual subject.". Im trying to learn this myself :) Im having a hard time adjusting though, because I think feel like I cant always capture what is pleasing in real life.... but of course, thats where the photography skills come into play!

  3. In time I think you start to view the world from a more aesthetic and compositional point of view. It's one of those things that you have to train yourself over time. As an example, did you ever read the Where's Waldo books? By the time you've gone through a couple pages you've started to train your eye to look specifically for those red and white stripes and you begin to see all the red and white that the artists put together in the entire picture. Same sort of deal, you just change how you look at something on the mental level.
